Responsible Gambling
Last updated: March 16, 2026
The Vegas Lab is a casino game simulator — no real money is involved. But we know that many of our users are interested in real casino play, and we believe it is our responsibility to be honest about the mathematics and risks of gambling.
The Mathematical Reality
Every casino game has a built-in mathematical advantage for the house. This advantage is called the house edge, and it is permanent, structural, and cannot be eliminated by any betting system, strategy, or pattern of play.
How Expected Loss Works
Your expected loss in any casino game can be calculated with a simple formula:
Expected Loss = Total Amount Wagered × House Edge %
Here are concrete examples:
| Game & Bet | House Edge | Bet/Round | Rounds | Total Wagered | Expected Loss |
| American Roulette (any bet) | 5.26% | $10 | 200 | $2,000 | $105.20 |
| European Roulette (any bet) | 2.70% | $10 | 200 | $2,000 | $54.00 |
| Craps Pass Line | 1.41% | $10 | 200 | $2,000 | $28.20 |
| Craps Any Seven | 16.67% | $5 | 200 | $1,000 | $166.70 |
These are not worst-case scenarios. These are averages. In any given session you may win or lose more than these figures. Short-term variance — the natural randomness of results — is what creates the illusion that systems work. But over hundreds or thousands of bets, actual results converge toward the expected loss. This convergence is a mathematical certainty, not an opinion.
No System Beats the House Edge
The Martingale, Fibonacci, D'Alembert, Labouchere, and every other betting system ever devised share the same mathematical outcome: they do not change the house edge. They rearrange the timing and size of wins and losses, but they cannot alter the underlying probability. Our strategy articles explain exactly why, with numbers.
Warning Signs of Problem Gambling
Gambling becomes a problem when it stops being entertainment and starts causing harm. The following warning signs may indicate that gambling is becoming problematic:
- Betting more money than you planned or can afford to lose
- Chasing losses — increasing bets to try to win back money you have lost
- Lying to family, friends, or others about how much time or money you spend gambling
- Borrowing money, selling possessions, or using savings to fund gambling
- Neglecting work, school, relationships, or personal health because of gambling
- Feeling anxious, irritable, or restless when you are not gambling or when you try to cut back
- Using gambling as a way to escape stress, depression, loneliness, or other emotional problems
- Continuing to gamble despite knowing it is causing financial, emotional, or relationship damage
- Needing to bet increasing amounts to feel the same level of excitement
Self-Assessment
Ask yourself these questions honestly:
- Do you spend more time or money gambling than you originally intended?
- Have you tried to cut back on gambling but found that you couldn't?
- Do you gamble to feel better when you are stressed, anxious, or upset?
- Do you go back to gambling to try to win back money you have lost?
- Has gambling caused problems in your relationships, work, or finances?
Answering "yes" to any of these questions does not constitute a diagnosis. But it does suggest that it may be worth speaking with a professional who specializes in gambling-related issues. There is no shame in asking for help — it is a sign of strength.
